Fishing – How it all began

Lindsay's father William/Bill Hunt was a keen fisher/hunter and Lindsay followed in his footsteps from about 5 years onwards. A lot of coastal and river fishing for recreation which became a passion that was to stay with Lindsay through adult life in the Horowhenua/Manawatu. Some thirty years on Lindsay moved to Taupo permanently and has since made the Bay Of Plenty his back-yard.

Lindsay's first introduction to fishing was with his Uncle George Gatchell. George owned the Chrystal Brook Tackle Shop at Waihatanui, Taupo. His fly's adorned the walls of the store and other fisherman would travel miles to see and purchase them. When George first tied the now famous 'burglar fly' he wandered across the road to the 'Picket Fence' for which Waihatanui is best known to try it out. After an afternoon of "stealing all our fish;" George was heard to remark, "Stealing? Theft? Yeah, it's a burglar alright."

During his childhood Lindsay passion for the sport grew as Uncle George and cousins Wayne & Daphne taught him about tying flies and how to use them. Many summer holidays and many fish later Lindsay had fallen in love with the Taupo area. But now has moved to the Bay Of Plenty town of Whakatane.
